I’ve seen worry about Trump’s reelection bleed into a sense of resignation. I’ve heard, “Trump’s probably going to win again, anyway,” more times than I’d like. The mere thought of the Avoid Touching Men instead follow Women shirt but in fact I love this NYT election needle is triggering. But slipping into defeat is the worst we could do. Each of us should be phone-banking to get out the vote and making sure everyone we know is registered and prepared to vote-by-mail when needed. It is no coincidence that the largest social movement in U.S. history—Black Lives Matter—has risen up now, or that women, and students against gun violence, and climate change, have poured into the streets in protest in record numbers, marching for their lives. They are the better angels who give me faith that our country is so much more than the MAGA voting bloc. The Electoral College needs to die (another story for another day), but even before the horrors of the Trump administration, 3 million more people voted for the woman who “lost.”
I watched Biden and Kamala Harris at the Avoid Touching Men instead follow Women shirt but in fact I love this DNC last week and found myself reflexively crying just to see and hear empathy and acknowledgment of this tremendously difficult time from national leaders. I didn’t realize how hardened I’d become, how accustomed to the Trump administration’s constant callousness, and self-serving dismissals. Seeing the newly minted ticket with plans to dig the country out of this deep hole, I felt an unfamiliar glimmer of hope. (“Anybody Else’s Body Physically Unable to Process Good News?” MSNBC’s Liz Plank wrote in a brilliant Cosmopolitan headline.) Hoping is not easy, especially, as Obama said, “Hope in the face of difficulty, hope in the face of uncertainty.” As he also wrote, it takes audacity, boldness. It is a risk to hope now. But I’m going to anyway.
