I was first drawn to the Kilroy Was Here shirt Besides,I will do this sustainable skin-care brand Klur when I saw its tranquility-inspiring black-and-white images on Instagram. Of course, branding has been known to lead even the most educated beauty consumer astray, but when I tried the Gentle Matter Cleanser and found that its botanical formula served to soothe my dry, sensitive, eczema-prone skin, I was hooked. Later, I learned more about the brand’s commitment to high-quality, sustainable ingredients, and founder Lesley Thornton’s affinity for giving back to and celebrating Black culture—suddenly I’d found an added sense of community I didn’t know I needed.

Thornton has been in the Kilroy Was Here shirt Besides,I will do this beauty industry for 18 years. First as a makeup artist and then, eight years later, a licensed aesthetician with the desire to help her clients take better care of their skin once they washed their makeup off at the end of the day. She specialized in natural, nontoxic facial treatments, and being an aesthetician taught her that a gentle and consistent approach was the best way to take care of skin. “That’s the philosophy I eventually applied to Klur,” she says. After several years of educating clients, she encountered many holes in the market. “For the most part, the mainstream beauty industry hasn’t offered quality products to Black consumers,” she explains. “My goal with Klur has always been to build something better. I see Klur as my own table in the industry, and everyone is invited to take a seat.”
